Gemma S, Urias is a surrealist painter, sculptor, and architectural designer based in Brooklyn, New York.
Born in CDMX, in the burough of Tlalpan, I grew up in Oxnard, CA, a small city shaped by it’s Mexican population until my 18th birthday.
Gemma is a Mexican American artist based in NYC since 2021. My work is composed of surrealist oil paintings as well as ceramic figures. The focal subject is life in the Americas, past and present and it’s broad experience from region, class, race and gender.
As we navigate the dawn of the Age of Aquarius , my self designed “humanoid” figure, reflects the constant evolution of technology as the constant “rebirth” through its fetus position.
My paintings, tailored through the feminine lens, I bring to the forefront the stories of women alike to my heritage, and those whose stories are so distant yet embody the feminine experience across lands.
Throughout my work, I reflect on the physical that is live on Earth, as well as its spiritual core, painting scenes that exist in between realms. My scenes and figures, like the age of Aquarius are contradicting, from soft and sweet moments with an underlying gloom that lurks beneath. As above so below.
Deriving iconography from the Catholic faith, and merging my spiritual practice, that is reflected in all of my figures. I believe that the lived experience is as beautiful as it is painful, my work reflects aims to illuminate the complexity of humanity.
